The collection includes two letters from Charles James to Paul Binai (1974) regarding James' career, design philosophy, and ideas about proper training. Additional materials sent to Binai by James include copies of letters to James and between other correspondents regarding James' work; opinions on design training; the James Foundation; exhibitions; donations of garments, art and papers; Guggenheim fellowship application. Two letters to Thomas Colt (n.d.) contain a detailed exposition of James' ideas about design training.

Paul Binai served as Curator of Exhibitions at the Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh. He became acquainted with fashion designer Charles James in the 1950s, who sent him these materials documenting his career in the 1970s. British born fashion designer, James opened his couture business in Paris in 1934 where he developed close associations with Dior, Poiret and others before relocating to New York in 1939. Retiring in 1958, he turned his attention to painting and scullpture but in 1962 designed a line for E.J. Korvette.
